Tramping Club Members’ Day On Mt. Edgecumbe
All but one of the party of 17 members of the newly formed Whakatane Tramping Club reached the summit of Mt. Edgecumbe on the club’s first official tramp on Sunday. Leaving Whakatane by truck at 8.30 on the Sunday, the party arrived at the foot of Mt. Edgecumbe at approximately half past nine and started the climb at 10 o’clock, arriving at, the top at one. This guide L. Dahm considered was a really good effort for an inexperienced club.
Starting the climb from the Fenton’s Mill side the party made fair time to the first level and stopped for. a breather and at a second stop the lack of training began to tell and the pace slowed a bit. On the third level the billy was boiled and morning tea made. The party then moved on to the next slope and into the bush-line, and the shade and the easier going gave every one a new lease of life and the pace speeded up. Unfortunately the weather changed and spoilt the view, though not before all had had a good look about the countryside. The cloud that came up made it useless to stay up any longer and the party returned to their truck with only a few bruises and a lot of tired muscles.
