Rod And Gun Club Entertains At Dinner
With a typically sportin’ menu, including smoked trout, wild duck, pheasant, wild pork and venison, guests at the County Rod and Gun Club’s ladies’ night dinner on Saturday found the invitation’s offer of “right good company, right good cheer” was no over-stqtement. Entertainment was on a lavish scale, and when the dinner and toast list were concluded everyone was in the friendliest possible mood for the dancing and social evening that followed.
There was evidence of painstaking work by the committee and helpers in the faultless preparations that had been made. The programme, too, interspersing light items with the toasts, indicated thoughtful planning. Altogether, the organisers had contrived to create an atmosphere of bright good fellowship that was soon reflected in the response of the guests, who all seemed to have a thoroughly delightful evening. Mr B. S. Barry, Mayor of Whakatane, proposed the toast to the club, immediately after the Loyal toast had been honoured, and Mr W. Howat, the Club’s patron, replied. Other toasts on the list were: “The Department of Internal Affairs,” proposed by the Club’s president, Mr J. D. Rivett and responded to by the ranger, Mr K. Francis; “President and Committee Mr Howat, Mr Rivett; “Sister Clubs,” Mr W. Davis, Dr D. Knight (Rotorua) and Mr J. Thomas (Te Teko); “The Ladies,” Mr R. F. Morgan, Mrs Rivett; “Artists and Helpers,” Mr Alf Mitchell, Messrs T. Smith and Wm. Mayo. Items were presented by “‘Miss O'Brien, Messrs T. Smith, J. Denham, Carpenter and Stewart. Miss Sykes was the pianist for the evening. ■
