1200 GNS REALISED FOR JERSEY BULL
At the Dispersal of Craigknoll Jerseys on account of Messrs W. S. and J. S. McEwen held at Pukeroro, Cambridge, on May 25 the main feature of the sale was the offering of the recently imported rising two-year-old bull “Jester of Highfield.” The sale was conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd. for Mr W. S. McEwen and the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Co. Ltd. for Mr J. S. McEwen, the latter being the vendor of the Imported bull. The purchaser at 1200 gns was Dr George Walker, of Whangarei, and the final underbidders were Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd. acting on instructions from two prominent Whakatane and Opotiki district breeders.
“Jester of Highfield” was bred by Mr Le Boutillier, St Owen, Jersey, and arrived in New Zealand from Jersey Island last November.
“It is doubtful if we have ever seen a bull of his equal for type and quality imported to this country, and it is regretted that our local breeders were unsuccessful in securing him,” said a Whakatane stock agent yesterday. Dr Walker’s own words were: “I came to buy him” and apparently price was a secondary consideration. —P.B.A.
