Local & General
The Optimist A humorous twist to the desperate housing situation was given* by a man looking at the set of photos of the flood in a stationer’s window in Whakatane recently. Noticing a footnote to a series of flooded home pictures that said “Will sell cheap—5/- the lot” he remarked that he wondered if the offer still held.
Peaches 3/6 to 5/- Each!
Writing to a friend at Whakatane, an Englishman mentions having seen peaches in a fruit shop, but at 3/6 to 5/- each. That put them beyond the reach of the average family, but, the. writer commented cheerily, “I have been to South Africa, so I do know what they taste like.”
Not That Bad Yet
A young Englishman came into the Beacon office recently to make it clear the English haven’t got down to supplementing the meat ration with cat yet. He recalled that a local herd tester recently back from England had mentioned dark whispers about the possible fate of strayed pets. He admitted things were pretty tough but that story, he said, was only a story.
Just Wondering A woman walked into a grocer’s shop in Whakatane th£ other day and asked, “Could you show me an egg, please?” The assistant explained that there were no eggs. “Are you sure you haven’t even an old egg?” his customer persuaded, a little wistfully. He regretted he had not. “A pity,” she. sighed. “I did so ,want to see one. I’ve forgotten what they look like.” Into Hot Water The bore being sunk for heating purposes at the State Forest Service office in Amohau Street, Rotorua, is now down 438 feet and water with a temperature of 200 degrees has been obtained. Work is still proceeding.
