Whirlwind Hits Thornton

A whirlwind which’hit Thornton last Tuesday morning about 7 o’clock caused damage to plantations, wrecked a maize crib and a shed, and lifted and overturned a small whare. The occupant, a Maori, was in bed at the'time but escaped with nothing more serious than a fright. Last week’s heavy rains caused considerable flooding in the Thornton district, and the greater part of at least one farm was temporarily under water, which isolated the home of Mr Smeaton, a sharemilker. Though the. Rangitaiki river ran a banker at one stage, fears that it would break over were fortunately not realised.
