They Need Our Help
In Europe alone there are 63,000,000 children in urgent need of assistance. The addition of China and other non-European- countries brings the total of children requiring immediate help to about 460,000,000. Great numbers of European children look two or three years younger than they actually are because malnutrition has retarded growth. Many are a stone underweight and at least three inches'undersize. Three-quarters of the babies in Albania weigh 4J pounds at birth. Only two mothers out of five can nurse their babies. It is almost impossible to buy clothes in Austria. Children are thinly.' clad and often go barefoot, while supplies of clothing in Syria meet only oile-tenth of the need. With the Chinese dollar worth one-450,000th part of the £ sterling, China must rely on foreign help for the food and equipment needed to raise the living standards of mil-, lions of children. A cold country, Finland has a critical shortage of child and adult clothing.
