Palestine Mails All postal services with Palestine are temporarily suspended, according advice received from Wellington by the Postmaster at Whakatane. A Commendable Effort

By dint of a lot of hard work and imagination the Otakiri school children contrived, by means ranging from a bottle drive to a “bring and buy” stall, to collect over £36 for the United Nations’Appeal for Children. The campaign lasted a week.

Wrapping Foodstuffs “That bakers wrap bread and bread-rolls in the bakehouse before sending them out,” was the context of a remit received from Paeroa and carried at the annual meeting of the Thames L Hauraki District Federation of Women’s Institutes held in Thames recently. Improved Church Organ The organ at the St. George’s Anglican Church, Whakatane, has been away for the past few weeks having a new amplifier and electrophonic tone system installed. It was reinstalled last week and the new alterations have given the instrument a new and sweeter tone and an increased volume. “Double Or Nothing” Students of the New Jersey College for Women made their initial contributions to the United Nations Children’s Appeal through a “Double or Nothing Day” on February 27. Three eating places near the campus charged double prices for everything purchased for 25 cents or less —half the resulting sum being given to the appeal. Several helpful professors held classes in the eating places to encourage more business—and greater contributions. Ohope’s Effort The Ohope Progress League reports that it was successful in raising £92 towards the three figure goal set for Ohope’s contribution to the appeal for children. Mr'F. Cutler, president of the League, said that he was very pleased with the Ohope citizens’ effort and the free way in which they gave to the worthy cause and also with the people who carried out the collection. Fire Brigade Display The Whakatane Fire Brigade gave a very impressive public display at the Heads on Sunday showing the efficiency of the unit and the value of the new equipment that it is using. A feature of the day was the use made of the trailer pump for boosting water from a source away from the scene of the fire, to the engine and out to the hoses. Some very good and accurate displays of directing the stream of water on to the training stands were also seen. Sections For Ex-Servicemen

The difficulty experienced by exservicemen in securing housing sections in Whakatane has been for some time receiving the attention Of the Rehabilitation Department and the R.S.A., and as a direct result of representations, four sections of Crown Land in Whakatane have now been made available for application from ex-servicemen desiring to acquire housing sections on which to build homes. These four sections are situated in James Street, approximately 300 yards from the corner of James Street and King Street, and on a tar-sealed road.
