Control Of New Rubbish Dump
Council’s Assurances To Louvain St. Residents
Having considered, the complaint of the Louvain Street ratepayers concerning the proposed new rubbish dump, the Whakatane Borough Council decided, at the ordinary meeting this week, to inform those concerned that the dump will be rigidly controlled in compliance with requirements laid down by the Health Department.
Mr A. R. Knights, District Health Inspector, was present and assured the Council that, if there were proper control of hours of tipping, proper filling,, and a discontinuance of indiscriminate tipping such as went on at the present dump, there should be no rat or odour nuisance. The Town Clerk, Mr L. D. Lovelock, is to convey that information officially to the complainants. He is also to inform them that the Council is awaiting a reply from the Medical Officer of Health to its inquiry concerning proper methods of control. They are to be assured that whatever the Council does will be in compliance with' that officer’s recommendations.
Moreover, the Council intends to approach the Chamber of Commerce with the idea of persuading businesses to arrange for a contractor to collect rubbish in the town area regularly, to overcome the indiscriminate dumping that has been common in the past.
