BIG FIELD FOR OPENING HUNT OF NEW SEASON
. Over 100 horses and riders took: the field for the first hunt of the season organised by the Rangitaiki Ward of the Opotiki Hunt Club and leading off from Mr J. Moody’s property at Taneatua on Saturday after breakfast at the Taneatua Hall.
At the breakfast, the Ward Master, Mr G. Fogarty was in the chair and, after the Loyal toast, the following short list was honoured:— “The Common Ground”, Mr Les Brown; “Kindred Horse Sports”, Mr H. Hauesler; “Visitors”, Mr J. Mood}, replies by Messrs Bob Black, President of the Opotiki Hunt Club and Mr Max Hansen, Te Puke; “The Landowners”, Mr Fogarty, • Messrs Alan Prince and Neil Reid; “The Ladies”, Mr J. Haslam, Mrs E. Hill; “The Sport of Hunting”, Mr Arthur Young, Mr Scott Abbott. Starting on Mr Moody’s property, the hunt followed across to Collins’s, where a hare was put up and the field went away in good style, back through Moody’s and. Mr P. Brown’s,' to Armstrong’s where the hare doubled back towards Brown’s and was lost. Later, having crossed the road after having passed through Collins’s and Reid’s properties, hounds put up several hares along, the river bank, but all were lost in the rough at the river side. Weather was beautiful, and the day’s sport thoroughly enjoyed by participants and spectators.
