WAIMANA-NUKUHOU INSTITUTE MEETING

There was a very good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute. Mrs R. Looney presided. Mrs J. Mitchell was elected delegate to attend the Drama meeting in Whakatane.

Mrs Les Robertson was welcomed as a new member.

Mrs Hewitt read her poem “Night,” which won first place at the recent Eisteddfod., It was decided to commence the June and July meetings, at 1.30 p.m. The Golden Thread talk was given by Mrs J. Boynton, her subject being the life of Sir James Carroll. A pleasing playette, written and produced by Mrs G. Stansbury, entitled “Oh, So Sudden” was nicely acted by Misses Nola Rust, Ann Cranswick, Doreen Hughes and Dora Wardlaw. Mrs Stevenson then gave a good report of the annual Federation meeting held at Whakatane recently. The roll call, “My most embarrassing moment,” brought forth lots of laughs and proved quite entertaining. Miss Currie gave an interesting travel talk on a trip from Dunedin to Gore and Kingston, sometimes travelling by bus and tramping on foot from camps set up for several days.

A member, Miss Tizard, who is to be married shortly, was presented with a small gift from members, who wished her all the best.

The day’s competitions resulted: Best multiple flower: Mrs King 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs H. Bell 3. Best single flower: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs Wylde 2, Mrs J. Boynton 3. Best vegetable: Mrs White 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Mrs F. Bell 3. Three apples Mrs J. D. Wardlaw 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Mrs F. Bell 3. Jar peach jam: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs F. Bell 2.

After a delicious afternoon tea, Mrs Looney thanked all who had assisted with the meeting.
