Points From Last Week’s Hockey Matches: Useful Hints For Players
(By “Asbeen”) Whakatane and Taneatua women played a fast even game of hockey last Sunday and, although beaten, Taneatua were not disgraced. A young team, with a few more games they will be hard to beat. The two O’Brien girls played solid hockey, but the centre was weak in penetration. The half line was quite good. Miss Rangi should be pulled up for wild hitting. Someone will be getting serio'usly hurt some day, and it does not tend for good hockey. Whakatane went well. The- forwards were solid, Miss Chamberlain at centre playing her usual brilliant game. She is considered by those who know to be the best centre in the competition. The two insides combined well and were very forceful, especially Miss Canned, who is always dangerous . in the circle.’ Miss Moore on the wing is too greedy, and should try to draw the defence and centre quicker. Miss Windley played well at centre-half. In fact the whole half line has improved considerably. The fall backs were not as solid as usual. The men’s game on the day was fast for the first half, Whakatane being just a little too good. Walla at back once again, proved his worth, this player being the most outstanding on the field. Cox has Unproved and is. feeding his forwards better. ’ The half line was a good combination. The forwards proved too strong for the opposition, Rigden at centre was outstanding and scored some brilliant goals. Hammond and Stringer are two very dangerous and fast players. Stringer’s two goals were from fast following up. Penny will play better hockey when he learns to hold his
stick in both hands. He is fast and has a good reputation but onehanded player cannot control the ball. Winn is improving with every game. For Taneatua, Griffin at full back played a solid game, but would be well advised not to talk too much on the field during play. is improving, but the other "halves were weak. B. Rawson played well and is always dangerous. The rest of the forward line missed some excellent opportunities through being a bit too eager, though this is a point to be commended and they only need to slow down their.play a little and watch the trend of the game.
