Historic Tunisia And Algeria: Rotary Address
Local Rotarians listened with interest on Tuesday evening to an address by Mr W. Dreghorn, on the historic and cultural association of the races now inhabiting that part of Northern Africa embracing Tunisia and Agleria. Speaking from personal observations, Mr Dreghorn was able to illustrate his talk with a splendid series of sketches and paintings executed on the spot, and these alone indicated the speaker’s versatility as an artist and his remarkable powers as a keen observer and student of human nature. Main theme of his address centred round the Roman ruins which had been excavated from the desert sands at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Many striking views were shown' of the main buildings, the early temples and the later Christian buildings which characterised the whole of the early communities of the colony before the great Islamic invasion and subsequent subjection. The celebrated Roman ruins at Timgad Were also described and enlarged upon, the speaker’ often diverting his theme to illustrate some point of Roman communal life in which was rooted the modern counterpart of administration- and legal expression. A hearty vote of dhanks was carried in the usual way on the motion of Mr H. W. Brabant.
