Mild Weather Puts Ducks Up High On Opening Day Of Shooting Season
The lack of wind and rain made the ducks fly high on the. opening day of the 1948 shooting season on Saturday. Despite these facts a number of limit bags have been reported and nearly every shooter in this district obtained at least a duck. Conditions • around the Whakatane area were possibly the best in the district, though the amount of shallow- flood water lying about after the recent heavy rain spread the ducks out fairly well and made it a patient wait for ducks to fly by. Shooters at Wainui were unlucky as the shooting there is done on the high tide and Saturday morning’s tide was low, with the result that that ducks settled too far out of range of the maimai. On the afternoon tide the birds refused to settle.
Pheasants were,, reported., plentiful, over the whole district though not many were brought home.
The Rod and Gun Club officials say that limits* bags were obtained by Mr G. Lodge and party, Mr W. J. Sullivan’s party, the Moody Bros, of Ruatoki, Mr L. S. George and party and Mr J. Hignett. It is believed that other limit bags were obtained around the district.
