“BUSHED” FOR A NIGHT ON MT. EDGECUMBE: HIKERS’ MISFORTUNES
Some concern was felt by friends of three young men who were missing from their lodgings at Whakatane on Sunday night after an expedition to Mt. Edgecumbe. They turne'd up again yesterday morning, tired, hungry and satisfied that mountaineering has a bit more to it than just walking up hills. The three, Messrs H. T. Bingham, M. McGill and T. McCarthy, set out on Sunday afternoon to * climb Mt. Edgecumbe. Picking up two more men with the same idea at Edgecumbe,. they accomplished their purpose, but darkness caught them groping vainly for the why back, the ascent having taken longer than expected. After walking almost to the- point of exhaustion, they settled down to make the best of a cold uncomfortable night, and trekked out to their car in the morning, a three-hour tramp.
