Councillors Take Dim View Of Township Plan

County Councillors’ comments on the Land and Survey Department’s scheme-plan for the Edgecumbe township development were anything but favourable. The plan showed in all 75 building allotments, but the letter accompanying it said it was 'proposed for the present to deal only with those fronting the Rotorua-Whakatane main highway. The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, and Crs R. C. Leslie and D. Butler all commented on the' narrowness of the sections which they considered would result in undue crowding of the houses to be built there. Mr Burnett agreed with Crs L. W. Luxton and Leslie that such crowding would aggravate fire risk, but said it was in line with State housing policy in the cities. Crs Leslie and Butler opined that the sports area was sited on the driest part of the land available and would have been better for housing.

The scheme plan was submitted to the County engineer for a report.
