Council Alleges Garage Built Without Permit
Tuesday’s meeting of the Whakatane County Council resolved to take action against Mr L. Simpson, of Edgecumbe, who, it was alleged, had built a garage without a Council permit, though Councillors, in discussing, the matter, conceded that he had at one time had a permit from the Building Controller, though a year or so ago. Cr D. C. Butler, chairman of the Works Committee, supporting the committee’s recommendation that Mr Simpson be prosecuted and action taken through the Building Controller to have the garage demolished, said there were a lot of people who had wanted to build at Edgecumbe and had been stopped. If this case (which was, moreover, in a prohibited area) was allowed to slip by, it would become a dangerous precedent. Others agreed that the Council’s authority must be enforced, and the recommendation was adopted.
