Woollen Goods Important As Dollar Earners In Hard Currency Areas
Empire woollen goods are assuming more and more importance as earners of dollars in the hard currency areas.
Australia is pinning its faith to increased exports of woollen goods to dollar countries as a means of avoiding further drastic cuts in dollar imports. The Federal Government this month lifted restrictions on the export of a wide range of Australian woollen goods to dollar countries. British makers, too, are hoping to do even better in the United States market than they have in the past. In this they will be helped by the pre-eminent reputation enjoyed by British woollen and. worsted cloth in the United States. All classes of people there recognise it as the world’s best, states a report of a British Wool Textile Mission, received by the New Zealand Wool Board.
British wool textiles, the report states, enjoy an American prestige which has been achieved by sheer merit. The outlook for them in this market is bright, if quality, style and prices are right. In 1939 Britain sold America more than one million dollars worth of cloth at less than 80 cents a pound.
