“Asbeeen” Reviews Saturday’s Hockey: New Players Improving In Style

Twenty men’s and women’s teams took part in the weekend’s hockey draws around the Whakatane district. The results for the Rangitaiki and Whakatane sections are:-

Whakatane: Women, Awakeri 4 d Paroa B nil; Paroa Aid Taneatua nil; Whakatane 4 d Poroporo nil. Men: Awakeri 7 d Paroa 1; Awakeri B 4 d Taneatua 3; Whakatane 3 d Poroporo 1.

Rangitaiki: Women, Te Teko 3 d Rangers nil; Matata Old Girls, 4 d Rovers 2.

Men: Rovers 1 draw Te Teko 1; Riverslea 3 d Rangers 2. Poroporo women’s hockey team played a fast and good game but were defeated by a more experienced team. Though requires more experience Miss Watawira, centre, does not follow up fast enough, and opportunities are, lost. The half line is very weak and needs improvement. The two backs are solid, especially Miss Merito.

Whakatane women went well together, Misses Howell and Kilgour being two solid backs. The half line has improved a little- from the last game. Mrs Stokes wants to get into training. Miss McGee was sound, again and fed her forwards in ,the right style; Miss Riini must learn, to control her stick and also use her hands more. The forwards went in. their usual dashing style. A new player on the wing was weak, but will improve with practice. It is understood that this was her first match..

The goalie, Miss Archer, did not have much to do, but should keep awake and not let the little trickles through. ’ ;

Poroporo men played a fast, solid game. Bluett in goal made some good clearances, but is inclined to obstruct. Ngaungau, at back, was solid and had a lot of work. Nuku is not up to the standard of his last season’s play, hut is always dangerous. Martin-was solid, as also was-the outside right. The attacking work of the forward line was weak, the fault being too much bunching and not keeping positions.

Whakatane men were solid right through their game. Winn scored a nice goal from an awkward angle, very satisfying for a new player. should get some glue on his hand, and perhaps could hold his stick. . Rigden played a sound game, but was a bit wild in the circle. Hammond and Stringer work well together »and should make a good fast combination. The captain of the team should see that his goal keeper keeps his position properly attended, although it did not make any difference to his ability. Cox played better this week, and with Stoddart, who played exceptionally well, and Penny, the half line will show a vast improvement. Waller, and A. Puke, fullbacks, were a tower of strength and put out a number of good clearing hits.
