Saturday’s Gymkhana

Combined Effort Was Unqualified Success With large entries in every event, the biggest array of side shows ever assembled in the Bay of Plenty and good weather (at least at the beginning of the day), the combined gymkhana on Saturday was an undoubted success. There was excellent public support, and the takings approximated £SOO.

With the full support of Hunt Club, A. and P. and Winter Show supporters, the programme of horse events was packed with interest, and attracted some excellent horses though, as was inevitable in such large fields, there were some rough jumpers, too. The judge, Mr G. B. Henry of Katikati, expressed general satisfaction with the class of work he saw by both horses and riders, and admitted that sorting out some of the placings had been anything but easy. Just on 120 entrants took part in a children’s fancy dress parade, which entered the grounds in procession led by me’mbers of the Young New Zealanders’ Club on a decorated truck, from which they put over / a number of musical items. Followed decorated trolleys, bicycles and tricycles, as well as an impressive array of pedestrians in costume. Judges were Mesdames N. Hill, Taneatua, A. G. Allen, Whakatane, and Peck,, Otakiri. Organisers were Mrs Cairns and Messrs H. G. Warren and R. Chapman. Local traders and agencies took full advantage of the trade exhibit space and ‘ the feature of the day from that point of view was the parade of new model vehicles, including tractors, trucks and cars.
