Taneatua War Memorial Committee Advance Big Ideas For Memorial Fund
There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Taneatua War Memorial Committee held in the Taneatua Hall and presided over by Mr Goodhew. Mr Goodhew in his report on the year’s workings mentioned the great amount of work done by the committee. Card evenings had been held, children’s sports day featuring basketball and Rugby football had proved a very popular fixture and would be made an annual event. A gala day had helped the funds considerably. The balance sheet was read and confirmed. It was reported that a very suitable site was available for purchase for the erection of a community centre as a war memorial.
The decision of those present was that the purchase be made and that a community centre be built as the Taneatua War Memorial. It was decided to hold a basketball and , Rugby tourney for school children on the lines of that held last year, the date to be arranged. Officers for the year are: President, Mr Goodhew; deputy chairman, Mr Steer; secretary-treasurer, Mr Cohu; executive committee, Mesdames Semmens, Hill, Bennett, Messrs McGougan, Hamerton, Torrie, Shaw. s ‘
At the conclusion of the wat memorial business Mr Alexander addressed the meeting on the campaign which will commence at the beginning of May for the relief of distressed children in Europe. Sympathy with the object was evident and a committee comprising Messrs Cohu (secretary), Richardson, Alexander, Torrie and Shaw was elected to make the necessary arrangements for a house to house canvass.
