Women’s Institutes

Arrangements for an Arts and Crafts Circle were made and two afternoons per month allotted, first and third Tuesdays. Mrs Caverhill gave a short interesting talk on the W.I. movement. Competitions for the day were judged by Mrs Dickson, with the following results:— Best jar fruit: Mrs Mardell 1. Best flower: Mrs Dickson 1. Best jar of jam: Mrs Wainwright 1. A special competition for a box of chocolates was won by Mrs Caverhill. •

Meeting At Thornton

The newly-formed Ohope Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting' at the Captain’s Cabin last week. The meeting was opened by Mrs Kerr, president, and the Aspirations were read in unison. Then Mrs Kerr read an interesting article on “Life in the U.S.S.R.” There was quite a good turn out and amongst those present were Mrs I. Withy and Mrs K. L. Caverhill, who were present at the preliminary meeting to form an Institute at Ohope. Mrs Dickson was elected vice-pre-sident.

The April meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs Dueker presiding. An interesting letter was read from the Federation President. Delegates chosen for the Council meeting were Mrs Dueker and Mrs Branch. A successful garden party was held during the month at Mrs McDonald’s residence in order to raise funds for the delegates’ expenses to Wellington. Mrs Magee offered to pack this month’s food parcel to Craighellachie Link, Scotland. This concluded the business and a pleasant social half-hour followed. Competition winners were:— Machine cotton frock: Mrs Dueker 1, Mrs D. Branch and Mrs Gardner equal, 2. Jam sponge roll: Mrs Checkley 1, Mrs Gardner 2. Modern vase of flowers: Mrs Dueker 1, Mrs D. Branch 2. Best flower: Mrs Gardner 1, Mrs Sheat 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Ferguson 1, Mrs Law 2. Results of the year’s competitions: Points prizes: Mrs J. Branch 1, Mrs Gardner 2, Mrs Watts 3.
