United Rugby Football Club Begins Season With Games Against Opotiki
The Rugby season in Whakatane started on Saturday with a series of three matches played by the Whakatane United Club against the Opotiki Maori teams at the Domain. ®
The visitors were unlucky in the junior and the third grade matches, but defeated the senior team with a narrow margin by superior play especially in the forwards. The junior match was only a try-out for United and was not really a fair test from the opposing team’s point of view as they were up against a number of fresh men in the second half. United thirds had an easy win and .their superior play in all sections shows them to be a good team in the making. Competition matches start on April 24 and there are a large number of teams being fielded in all grades so the season should be a good one. Saturday’s results are:— United seniors 8 lost to Opotiki 12. United juniors 17 defeated Opotiki nil, and United third grade 17 defeated Opotiki nil.
