Whakatane Electricians’ Institute’s Proposed Trip Around Hydro Schemes
The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Branch of the Electricians Institute decided to make a trip to the Waikaremoana hydro-electrical schemes on April 24 for the purpose of viewing the new scheme and the almost completed, unit of the Kaitawa station.
When the chairman, Mr F. W. Lysaght, was asked the commencing date of the apprentices’ classes Mr R. Oxenham replied that he would start classes on April 8 and he was sorry to state that apprentice-stu-dents from Opotiki would not be attending this year because of lack of transport. , •
In the absence of Mr Hoskins, Mr Drube, the other delegate to the conference, gave his impressions of their visit to Dunedin. The delegates were, impressed by a talk on Electronics and the lecturer stressed the need for the electricians to know more about it because of its coming importance particularly in industry.
General approval by the conference Was given when it was suggested that the Electricians Institute should play some part in the application of the Apprenticeship Act. The very poor application of lagging in hot water cylinders causing unnecessary losses * of. heat as well as vdry little' possibility 'of improvement being forseen caused considerable comment. It was suggested that the Standards Institute investigate the position. Results of remits and various discussions were read; also a suggestion from the National Council that films of electrical accidents be given Dominion-wide showing to the general public.
