Poor Reception For Magician
Billed as “The Great Dante,” a visiting “master magician” received a poor reception from an audience of 500 in Ashburton. The show lasted less than an hour and the'crowd refused to disperse for some time although urged to do so by the police. Finally, Dante was escorted from the hall by a policeman and disappeared in a taxi. Some of the spectators entered his dressing room after the show and plied the magician with questions as to why he failed to present an advertised act of cutting through the torso of a winsome lass and the non-appearance of J. Chandos. He was billed: “Nothing on earth can hold him; he escapes from cream cans, mail bags and strait jackets.” The explanation was that the cream cans, etc., had been delayed in Oamaru. The crowd finally dispersed when the magician left in company with a constable.
