Large Programme Covered. At Monthly Meeting Of Whakatane W.I.

There was a very good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute held in the Methodist Hall on April 6, Mrs Print presiding.

All members- observed one minute’s silence in sympathy for a member in her bereavement.

A letter from Corso was read and discussed and resulted in the immediate formation of a sewing circle to be hqld twice a month at the Institute rooms, Mrs Phil Dixon convener, and Mrs Fennell is now convener for seeds of kindness to be sent to Corso. Notice was also received frdm Mrs L. D. Lovelock re diversional therapy training that is to be instituted soon. . Roll call for May is gifts of pencils, paper and soap to be sent to Corso. Two new members were welcomed on the day, Mrs Mortensen and Miss L. Hirst.

Eisteddfod arrangements were finalised and a light lunch will be available for those desiring it on -the day. The talk given by Mrs E. Haultain on • “Women in the Community” was very much appreciated, and a piano'duet by Mrs Mayo and Master Barry Dixon was a pleasant addition to the programme. A very interesting floral demonstration was given by Mrs Peck, of Otakiri. Mrs Mayo and Mrs Peck were recipients of shoulder sprays; sprays were presented with good wishes to all members whose birthday occurred in April. Competition results:— (a) Three gingernuts: Mrs Butler 1, Mrs Murphy 2, (b) Jar of preserved peaches: Mrs Patterson Senr. 1, Mrs Larsen'2. (c) Best three flowers arranged for effect: Mrs Sutcliffe 1, Mrs Hannah 2. " .

Gardening Circle

The gardening circle was held in the Institute hall, Mrs Fennell presiding over a fair attendance. A new member, Mrs Flay, was welcomed to the circle. Election of„offxcers: —Mrs Fennell, convener ; Mrs Hannah, secretary; Mrs Larsen, competitions secretary. Final arrangements of programmes for the coming year were made. The convener thanked the retiring secretary for her work. Competitions for the day were:—. (a) Best flower: Mrs Sutcliffe 1. (b) Best vegetable: Mrs Sutcliffe and Mrs Hannah 1.
