1948 Hockey Gets Good Start in Week-End Play

A very creditable start was made in +be 1948 hockey season in the week-end when several teams around the c ; strict started their draw matches. Paroa through some slip-up were unable to send their teams to take part in the draw and thus lost several games and several points by default to their opposing teams. Whakatane section play results are:— Men: Whakatane 5 d Awakeri 1; Poroporo 2 d Awakeri B 1; Taneatua won by default from Paroa. Women’s Section: Whakatane 11 d Awakeri 0; Poroporo won by default from Paroa; Taneatua also won by default front Paroa. Rangitaiki Section, Men: Richmond 5 d Te Teko 0; Rangers 6 d Rovers 0. Women’s Section: Te Teko 4,d Matata 0; Rovers 7 d Rangers 0. Hockey Notes : ’ * ‘ fi (By Asbeen) The first of the season games were very scratchy, both the ladies and men’s, some good hockey should be seen when they settle down. Betty Newdick played an outstanding game in goal for Awakeri.

This player will go a long way this season. Nora Jensen at centre half played a good solid game, the other players are inclined to bunch too much, instead iof keeping in their positions. This may rectify itself as the season progresses, a matter for their .coaches to look intQ.' For Whakatane Mrs Chamberlain, Moore, Cannell put in some good work in the forwards, they also •- must learn to keep their positions and not crowd. McGee at centre half did good work but could still improve; the two fullbacks were sound Mrs Kilgour should play back and not up in the forwards as the second half of the game proved.' The men’s games were very fast in fact too much hard hitting and crowding was the order of both sides. Walla in full-back played an. excellent game, and proved the most - outstanding player of the day; Cox must learn to keep his head and to feed his forwards more.’Short passing and fast following up will win ; more games than hard blind bashing; Hammond in the circle is still very fast and very dangerous. Jensen for Awakeri played a very solid game, Boulder also played a. good game and is dangerous in the circle arid with more support from his forwards will do better in future matches. The number of new players in the game is very pleasing and they are all wished the best of luck for the game. Wairaka Teams For Sunday Following are the Wairaka Hoc-, key Club’s teams to play at Ruatoki on Sunday:— A Team: B. Merito, C. TuhorcT, B. Hudson, R.-Crapp, S. Merito, W, Wainui, R. Hudson, J.
