President’s Report To Rugby Sub-Union Shows Most Successful Season
In his report to the annual meeting of the Whakatane Rugby SubUnion last Thursday night the president, Mr W. S. Henderson, said that a most successful season had passed financially as well as from the games point of view. Mr Henderson went on to congratulate H. Ranapea on his selection in the Maori All Black team that toured New Zealand and also to compliment B. McGougan on his nomination to play in the All Black selection trials. In congratulating the Paroa, Poroporo, Wairaka and the United clubs on their respective successes throughout the last season he said he hoped that this season would also meet with the good sportsmanship and sound football was played by all clubs last year. In the election of officers Mr W. R. Boon was elected the patron of the Sub-Union, vice-patron, Mr W. Sullivan, president, Mr N. Semmens, vice-presidents, Rev Rangi, Messrs. N. Bremner, J. D. Rivett, S. McLeod, C. L. Hudson, P. Coutts, W. Alexander, S. Carter, W. Henderson, G. Lodge. Tne sec-retary-treasurer is Mr D. Stewart, hon. auditor, Mr D. Debreceny, hon. solicitor, Mr L. Buddie, hon. surgeons, Drs. Maaka, Cole, Appleby and Akel. In the positions of selectors for. the various grades are: Seniors, Messrs. J. Black, F. Harawira, P. Bryers; juniors, Messrs. C. Wells, G. Gordon and R. L. Murphy; third grade, H. Cain and Loney. The union intends to open its 1948 season on April 24. Rangitaiki Rugby: Last Year’s Record Reviewed A*t the annual meeting of the Rangitaiki Rugby Sub-Union at Edgecumbe last week, Mr A. C. Robins was in the chair and delegates from all the clubs and the Referees’ Association were present. • The chairman’s report made mention of the services of the late president, Mr F. J. Burt, to Rugby in the Union. He also congratulated the winning teams and mentioned the services rendered by the Referees’ Association. The junior representatives held the > Shalfoon Memorial Shield till the' last challenge when Te Puke captured it. They .made a strong bid to regain it on the replay. The Te Puke Club won the Mclntosh Shield and held it till the, last game. The Waikohu Sub-Union paid a visit during the season and played a match at Te Teko. > Officers elected were: patron, Mr T. Anderson; president, Mr A. C. Robins; deputy chairman, Mr B. Magee; vice-president, all club presidents, the president of the Referees’ Association, and Messrs. H. L. Anderson, C. Eivers and H. Mexted; hon. vice-presidents, Mesdames H. L. Anderson and T. Dunderdale; secretary, Mr C. E. Thompson; assistant secretary, Mr J. C. Hawken; auditor, Mr E. Rogers; delegates, to Bay Union, Messrs. E. Naumann and C. E. Thompson. It was decided to have three selectors for both Seniors and Juniors. Six senior teams were nominated, five junior and two third grade. The opening date was fixed for April 24. Affiliation fees were fixed at 2 guineas for seniors and 1 guinea for juniors. N.Z. Possible Venue For Imperial Rugby Conference The possibility of the next Imperial Rugby conference being held in New Zealand during the British team’s tour in 1959 was mentioned at the Rugby Union meeting by the president, Mr. Sutherland, New Zealand delegate to the recent Imperial Conference in London. He said that he had made the suggestion unofficially, while in London, and it had met with a good reception. He considered that an official invitation would be accepted.
