Otimai Re-Floated The Northern Steamship Co’s vessel Otimai, which went aground on a sand bank inside the Heads on Thursday morning when the tow rope carried away as she was being turned into the main channel', was re-floated oh Saturday! and sailed for, Auckland on Sunday morning’s tide. Popular Parodies Popular part of the Whakatane Rotary Club’s reception to the District Governor, Mr Reg Gambrill, last week were parodies of old-time songs, presented by Rotarian C. Kingsley-Smith accompanied by Rotarian R. Mollgaard. The parodies, simply arid catchily phrased, poked good-natured fun at most of the members of the Club, who enjoyed the items thoroughly and took up the choruses with gusto. First. To Start The sealing of Quay Street was completed one day ,last week and now the new cleanliness of the road puts the rear entrances of the business premises there to shame so one of the leading stores in the street has formulated a scheme in which it intends to clean up the rear section and plant it out in some strong growing flowers. According to the manager of the store part of this scheme has already been put in to operation and should be complet-, ed in the near future. ,
Successful Appeal A large quantity of goods was donated to the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Nursing Division’s “Paddy’s Market” and afternoon tea stall appeal held on Saturday and there was a good response from the public. However, various counterattractions about ■ the town proved a little too much for the complete success of the appeal, but despite that handicap £54 was cleared and .there is still a quantity of produce left for disposal. The sponsors have decided to hold an auction sale tonight in the hope of clearing the remainder of the goods. Example And Help
'Just' back from a conference at Auckland, Miss A. J. North, secretary of the local branch of the Crippled Children’s Society, expressed herself as deeply impressed with the personal example of Dr. Earl Carlson, American authority on cerebral palsy, in overcoming his own disability, as well as his help to children, their parents and the medical profession in this country. In the light of what Miss North learned at Auckland, Thursday night’s annual meeting of the local branch of the Society should be more than usually interesting, and a record attendance 4s anticipated.
