United Cricketers Retain Williams Cup In Last Challenge Of The Season

During the week-end the Pirates Club of Rotorua played United at Whakatane in the last challenge of the season for the Williams Cup. United retained the trophy by 48 runds on the Ist innings. United won the toss and elected to bat but apart from Spring who scored 54 the other batsmen were not impressive and the side was dismissed for 102.

Pirates in their first strike were unable to cope with the accurate bowling of Spring and McKenzie who both finished with 4 for 22 and were out at 2.30 p.m. for 54. United lost three quick wickets in their second innings but McKenzie and Crawford then put on 87 runs in quick time, McKenzie being caught after compiling 71. The innings was then declared and Pirates were left an hour and a half in which to score 163 runs to win. At close of play they had lost 5 wickets for 119 Wyllie scoring 55, leaving United the winners on the Ist innings. Following are the scores in detail;
