Culling Dry Two-Tooths

For those farmers desiring to cull dry two-tooths or, for that matter, other dry ewes, it is suggested that they make use of “teaser” rams, which are run with the mob for about 20 days from 48 hours after the removal of the rams, states R. A. Barton in the Massey Agricultral College sheepfarmers’ book. This allows culling for barrenness at the earliest possible date. For best results the “teaser” ram is one which has been operated on to make it sterile, an operation known as vasectomy. The “teaser” ram is raddled daily on the brisket and marks on the rump ewes which come on heat and are therefore not in lamb. Such ewes can be removed from the breeding flock and disposed of to the best advantage, such as selling as fats at winter prices.
