Three Million Bushels Of Apples And Pears To Be Harvested This Season
About 3,000,000 bushels of apples and pears—an exceptionally good crop—will be harvested in New Zealand this season. Arrangements have been completed to send 1,000,000 bushels to Britain. Because the crop is large, this will leave 2,000,000 bushels for New Zealand consumption, or much the same as last year, and actually 750,000 bushels more than the annual pre-war consumption. Apples are about 7d or l-|d per lb. dearer than last year. The increase in price to the consumer has been necessary to compensate growers for the withdrawal of the subsidies. - In spite of this small increase in the purchase price per lb., apples are likely to remain the cheapest fruit available. The maximum retail price during the main harvest period from March till May will be 6d per lb., but much fruit will be cheaper than this because apple retail prices are controlled and rise or fall on current wholesale values.
