Rowing Season Ends With Yankee Trial Fours: Ideal Conditions

On Saturday the Whakatane Rowing Club held its closing day under ideal rowing conditions. The closing events took the form of Yankee trial fours and the fair number of spectators saw some excellent races. As there were seven crews entered, it meant 21 races in all, each crew rowing six times. A very tasteful afternoon tea was served to all those present by women supporters. The winning crew, G. Moore, K. Dines T. Reid, M. Brown (T. Reid cox) put up a great showing winning five races and drawing in the sixth.

Moore’s crew gained 111 points out of a possible 12 and therefore holds the Mick Armstrong Memorial Cup for 1948. Other participating crews, were:— L. Carey (s), K. Hollis, H. Arm-/ strong, B. Bowering; L. Stewart (s), E. Hunt, W. Sandham, T. Stewar.t; G. Henry (s), M. Nicol, M. Whit-

taker, J. Hudson; K. O’Rourke (s), S. Shapley, W. Stuart, A. Atkinson; P. Armstrong (s), G. Dines, D. McCarthy, B. Fitzgerald; R. Morpeth . (s), D. Stewart, B. Cutler, J. Taylor. Results follow: — G. Moore beat O’Rourke by one length; Stewart beat Morpeth by 1£ lengths; Henry beat Armstrong by 1|- lengths; Carey beat O’Rourke by 10 feet; Moore beat Stewart by ! length; Henry beat Morpeth by 5 feet; Armstrong beat Carey by 'l£ lengths; L.
