Cockayne Memorial Fund The Forest and . Bird Protection Society advises that it has received to date £229 3s 7d towards the Cockayne Memorial Fund. Bellbirds Chase Owl At a private bird sanctuary in South Canterbury,- a German owl was hunted and harried by a number of bellbirds, states a contributor, to “Forest and Bird.” Bellbirds were so numerous here that one would be awakened in the morning by their melodious song of remarkable flutelike notes. Marriage Conciliation To help stem “this terrible drain on our married life,” as the Wellington City Missioner (the Rev. Harry Squires) puts it, the Wellington counterpart of the National Marriage Guidance Council of Great Britain intends to redouble its efforts in marriage conciliation and guidance. Useful Morepork The morepork regularly eats cicadas, beetles and wetas, states “Forest and Bird.” It - also commonly eats the adults of grubs, such as the “army worm,” which do great damage to grass paddocks, farm crops and lawns. In addition to the wexlknown cry of “morepork” it has other cries such as “kree kree.” Any Virgin Forest Left? There are not many people in New Zealand today who have seen a large area of native bush in its virgin state, says a contributor to “Forest and Bird.” This is because introduced animals, axe and fire, and the activities of man such as road-making have greatly affected the natural growth and regeneration of the native forest.
