Edgecumbe Development: 30-Acre Block To Be Cut Up For Houses And Shops

The Lands and Survey Department has now acquired 30 acres of Mrs Reynolds' property on the Main Highway and Riverslea-Otakiri road frontage opposite the timber mill as a site for the future residential and commercial development of Edgecumbe according to advice from the Department to the County Council. This purchase has been made in accordance with the recommendations of the committee appointed by the Minister of Lands, to provide a suitable residential area as far as possible free from flooding and sited to avoid any interference with flood control protec* tion works.

Steps are now being taken to subdivide the area and make sections available for disposal. Provision is being made for the location of a deviation of the highway to Te Teko and - the isolation of the area by a stop-bank. It is not intended to vary the previous restriction on. subdivision at Edgecumbe,:. particularly alon.g .ithe higher" ground for a distance of five chains along each bank of the river. No definite decision has yet been made regarding the method' to be adopted for the control of "the flood waters of the ,Rangitaiki River..
