British Housing Scheme Slackened Off: Priority To Export Industries

Despite the urgent need in Britain, housing construction schemes are no longer being rushed through with their former vigour. The reason for the slackening is the need to concentrate on expert industries to lift the country out of its economic difficulties. That, information wasgiven by Lieutenant-Colonel Larking, the British Empire Service emissary, to the N.Z.R.S.A. Dominion executive committee. In one area, Lieutenant-Colonel Larking explained that a points, system operated for the allocation of houses. A man was given one point for service in the forces, two for overseas service, one for his wife, and one for each child. By that it was not intended to disparage the service of men who worked in industry, some of whom undertook dangerous work. But the league held the view that the man who served overseas took extra risks.
