TANEATUA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REVIEWS YEAR’S ACTIVITIES
There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Taneatuat Women’s Institute which was held in the hall supper room, ?vlrs Grey presiding. Minutes of previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. A very comprehensive report had been prepared by the acting secretary, Mrs Peebles, and the reading of the balance sheet showed Institute finances to be in a much better state than had been the case for a number of years. Reports and balance sheets presented by the secretaries of the Drama Circle and Gardening Circle showed that both circles were flourishing and providing much pleasure for members. Ten shillings were raised for the parcel for Britain fund from sugar donated by Mrs K. Tebbutt. Letters of thanks were read from recipients of food parcels. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs Grey (re-elect-ed); committee, Mesdames Allen, Bennett, McDonald, Butler, Merrie, Peebles, Gardner, Lawn, Frost, A. Tebbutt, K. Tebbutt, T. Anderson; competitions secretary, Mrs Fitchett; home and country secretary, Mrs Butler; afternoon teas, Mrs Hayward; press correspondent, Mrs Grey. Points prize winners for the year: Horticultural, Mrs K. Tebbutt; Arts and Crafts, Mrs Tebbutt and Mrs Grey, equal; Cookery, Mrs Bennett. Monthly competitions:— Best flower, Mrs Merrie 1, Mrs A. Tebbutt 2.
Best vegetable: Mrs Hutchinson 1, Mrs K. Tebbutt 2. Dress worn by the maker, Mrs Fogerty 1, Mrs A. Tebbutt 2. Jar of plums, Mrs Gardner. Committee Meeting At a committee meeting held after the annual meeting Mrs Gardner was elected recording secretary, Mrs Merrie corresponding secretary and Mrs Allen treasurer. Many excellent suggestions for improving meetings and providing interest for members were brought forward and programmes for the following 12 months were drawn up. They were arranged so that the competitions will be seasonal and there should be entertainment for all tastes. Gardening Circle The annual meeting of the Taneatua W.I. Gardening Circle was held at Mrs Ricketts’ residence with a full attendance of members. Unfortunately the day was very wet, the only wet day in months, and members were unable to venture out to inspect the garden. The president, Mrs Butler, in presenting her annual report, thanked members for their co-operation during the year and mentioned the very successful flower show which the gardening circle had arranged for the September Institute meeting. mentioned the pleasure derived from having meetings at members’ homes and viewing the different gardens. Election of officers: President, Mrs Fitchett; secretary and . treasurer, Mrs Bennett (re-elected). Points competitions for the year were won by the following:— Silver vase for most points in best vegetable competition, Mrs Butler. Best flower, Mrs Olliver and Mrs Hayward, equal. Decorative, Mrs Cradwick. Most entries, Mesdames Butler, Olliver and Hayward, equal. The March meeting of the gardening circle will be held at Mrs Sis-am’s-and Mrs Allen to give a garden reading. A competition arranged by Mrs Ricketts' was won by Mrs_ Fitchett. Competitions for the month:— Shoulder spray, Mrs Sisam 1, Mrs Hayward 2, Mrs Fitchett 3. Best flower, Mrs Hayward 1, Mrs Sisam 2, Mrs Allen 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Olliver T, Mrs Butler 2, Mrs Sisam 3.
