Murupara Phone Service

Fully Automatic System On High Priority List A fully automatic telephone exchange will ultimately serve the Murupara-Galatea area, but, because the question of relocating the township of Murupara is still under consideration by the Ministry ,of Works, the Postmaster-General is unable to say just when the work of installation will be put in hand.

In response to an inquiry from Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., the Postmas-ter-General has outlined the proposals in the following terms: — “I am pleased to inform you that it is proposed to instal a rural automatic exchange at Murupara to serve the settlers in the MuruparaGalatea areas. The site for the telephone exchange and post office has, however, not yet been decided upon as the question of re-locating the township of Murupara on a new site is at present under consideration by the Ministry of Works. A site for the exchange will be acquired as soon as finality in this connection is reached.

“Being fully automatic, the proposed equipment will provide a continuous service for the subscribers, local calls being set up by dialling the wanted number direct, while toll calls will be effected through the Rotorua exchange, the dialling of a number giving direct access to the toll operators. The implementation of the proposal will not only ensure that up-to-date telephone service is made available to the maximum number of settlers, but will also provide the subscribers with continuous telephone service at reasonable annual rental charges. “The work will be given a high priority, but it is not possible at this stage to say when the exchange will be installed. However, I will advise you further in the matter when a site has been acquired and some indication can be given as to when the work is likely to be put in hand.”
