Taneatua Y.F.C. Reports Highly Successful Year
On Monday the Taneatua Young Farmers’ Club held its annual general meeting in the Taneatua Hall. Members turned out in force and Mr J. M. Barr, District Chairman, and Mr E. R. Marryatt, District Secretary, also attended. The Club chairman, Mr E. N. Le Heron, in his annual report, outlined the Club’s activities for the year. Ten monthly meetings were held and in addition to general business and debating, lectures were given by Mr H. Gilmour, Dairy Board Consulting Officer, on improvement through herd recording and improvement through breeding, and Mr Marryatt, Fields Instructor, Department of Agriculture, on certified grasses and seeds and weed identification.
Field days were held at Mr E. H. Hill’s orchard, where Mr R. Ducker demonstrated pruning, budding and grafting fruit trees. At the estate of W. Reid members inspected a new cow shed built entirely of concrete blocks, and an extensive area of river protection work. At Mr M. Doran’s farm the club stock judging competition was held. Mr A. H.
Adams demonstrated the desirable points to look for in judging an Ayrshire cow and the judging competition was won by A. Green, G. Hill and T.'Langdon. During the year two dances were held and one of the club’s outstanding achievements is that it was successful in over subscribing its quota for the National War Memorial Fund. The following officers were elected: Club chairman, Mr J. O’Brien; vice-chairman, Mr B. S. Murphy; secretary, Mr E. R. Hill; treasurer, Mr G. O’Brien; advisory members, .Messrs G. R. Yeoman (Senior), G. Santon, N. Reid and A. Wardlaw; general committee, Messrs J. O’Brien, R. Hill, G. O’Brien, B. S. Murphy, E. N. Le Heron, G. A. Hill; delegates to district committee, chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer; auditor, Mr T. E. Hamerton. Mr Barr and Mr Matryatt both addressed the meeting and congratulated the club on the year’s work. At the conclusion of the meeting a prepared debate was held, the subject being “That the dairy industry is of more benefit to New Zealand than the sheep and cattle industry.” The teams were: Negative, J. O’Brien, J. Fleming, G. O’Brien. Affirmative, R. Hill, B. L. Murphy, E. Le Heron. Mr C. Oliver acted as adjudicator and awarded the decision to the Affirmative side after a close and interesting contest.
