Harbour For Timber Trade?

Official Interest In Beacon's Suggestion There is evidence of official interest in the possibility, mentioned in a Beacon news item on January 27 and later in a leading article, that this port could be made capable of handling a share of the export trade from the Government timber development schemes in the Kaingaroa area. Mr C. H. Brebner, Harbour Board engineer, has been asked -. by the Commissioner of Works, Mr E. R. McKillop, for a large scale chart showing present depths at the entrance and in the inner channel, together wtth his comments on development" possibilities. The letter says the Commissioner wants the information, "to determine what possible service the Whakatane Harbour might give to the Bay of Plenty as a whole." That the move is tied up with the forestry development proposition is clearly indicated by the introductory paragraph of the letter, which refers to the Beacon's news item concerning possible developments in the exotic timber and pulp export trade.
