Whakatane Boxing Club Opens 1948 Season: Under New Instructor This Year
A very keen group of members was present at the opening of the Whakatane Boxing Club’s season on Tuesday night. Under the instruction of Mr W. Schmelz and Mr R. Singer the boys were put through a series of exercises intended to get them fit and toughen up loose muscles. Later in the evening a little light sparring was done with Mr Schmelz the new instructor in the ring. The club started off fairly late last season and was caught on the wrong foot by the suddenness with which the Boxing Association brought on their tournaments. Even so they did exceptionally well and have a number of wins to their credit.
This is due to a rule of the club that no boxer goes out to a tournament unless he has a good show of winning. This is for the protection of the not-so-experienced who would otherwise go into the ring as mere chopping blocks for' some more skilled boxer.
