“Utterly Damnable”
Speaking for the Government in the House of Lords’ debate on foreign affairs, Lord Pakenham described the Communist overthrow of Czechoslovakia as Communist in name, Hitlerite in technique and utterly damnable in every other way. After Czechoslovakia, he said, Finland is now being approached and embraced with the kiss of death. One lesson to be learned from the events in Czechoslovakia was that no governments or trade unions should allow Communists to join them.
