REHABILITATION LOANS EXCEED FORTY-SEVEN AND A-HALF MILLIONS

Rehabilitation loans worth £47,514,192 had been authorised for 58,397 ex-servicemen and women by the end of January. For the twomonth period December-January 2255 loans were authorised valued at £1,648,858. Loans have been for farms, businesses, houses, furniture, tools of trade and other miscellaneous purposes. Loans to purchase farms were increased from 4491 to 4591, which involved finance worth 18,655,959. This includes 563 exservicemen settled on Crown lands. The end of January saw housing loans brought to a total of 19,036 worth £22,779,518. There were 737 for December-January, valued at £894,916. There Have been 7953 building loans authorised, worth £11,330,416 and 11,443 purchase loans worth £11,449,102. The 359 building loans for December-Jan-uary were valued at £511,730, and the 378 purchase loans for the same period entailed £383,186. Included in the total figures to date was 11,112 supplementary loans involving £1,667,178. These supplementary loans are intended to bridge the gap between pre-war prices and pre-sent-day costs. Including 7945 who have been allocated State rental houses and the 4591 who have been placed on farms of their own, the number of ex-servicemen and women who have been given direct housing assistance through rehabilitation was 31,572 at the end of January. Other loan assistance to date is: Loans to purchase or establish businesses 5731 (£3,475,528), for Decem-ber-January 178 (£178,325); free-of-interest furniture, to date 27,219 (£2,563,550), for December-January 1204 (£109,041); free-of-interest loans to buy tools of trade, to date 1156 (£37,808), for December-Jan-uary 30 (£854); loans for miscellaneous purposes, to date 304 (£61,829), ' for December-January 6 (£420).
