ROTARIAN APPLEBY’S TOUR OF SOUTH ISLAND CLUBS
At the Rotary Club’s luncheon on Wednesday a very interesting and informal address was given by Dr. F. J. Appleby on his tour of South Island Rotary Clubs when he was returning from the medical conference held in Dunedin recently. Dr. Appleby said he had his opinion of Rotary as a world force considerably strengthened when he heard the conditions of the Rotary Scholarship read at a Rotary meeting in Blenheim. The successful nominee, he said, must take his studies in another country, not in New Zealand, the idea being to transfer New Zealand thought to other lands and in turn to bring back new cultures.
While at Picton Dr. Appleby was pleasantly surprised at the number of old Whakatane residents he met. According to him it is quite handy to be a member of Rotary because, when he could not . obtain lodging anywhere but at a second-rate bed and breakfast house he went to the president of the Picton Rotary Club and, stating his case, was immediately provided with lodgings at the Portage, the. leading hotel in the sounds district. In concluding Dr. Appleby quoted figures illustrating the increase in the number of Rotary Clubs throughout the world. On November '29 there were 6327 active clubs with a membership of 306,000. One hundred new clubs had started in 21 countries since July 1, 1947.
