Nursery For Children Of Working Mothers
Among unusual Red Cross services developed to meet community needs not filled by other organisations is the free day nursery for working members operated by the Ecuadorian Red Cross in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. In charge of a Red Cross doctor and two nurses, the nuresry daily takes care of 140 children between the ages of two months and four years whose mothers must work. The children are brought' to the nursery each morning at 8 o’clock by their mothers (the majority are fatherless) and remain until eight in the evening, when they are called for. During the day they are fed, bathed, receive physical check-ups, and are supervised in their play activities.
Facilities available at the nursery, which has been in operation for a number of years, include a large ward with a milk laboratory for infants, a large ward with ,a dining room for toddlers, a play court for older children, an isolation ward for ill children, and the doctor’s office and examination room.
Infants are bottle-fed during their hours at the nursery. Older children receive a varied and well-bal-anced diet that is in sharp contrast to what thev onld roepive at homo
