Regular Exercise, Apart From Work, Necessary For Healthy Living
(By the Department of Health)
Exercise should form part of one’s daily routine. All kinds of exercise are more beneficial out of doors. The fresh air, the wind and sunshine are tonics, and a little exercise each day in these . tonic surroundings gives a feeling of wellbeing. Your exercise shouldn’t go so far as to worry you unduly and give you aching muscles. Proper exercise does not do this. It builds up the muscles and gives good carriage and good posture. The blood vessels are helped, too —they have to work to supply the extra blood needed by the cells and to carry away the extra fatigue products. And the heart has to accommodate itself and be an obliging pump—all very good for the vascular system. Your extra weight is checked, your appetite and digestion- and your bowel action are all assisted. You can stand your work better, your worries better, and you will live longer, if you keep in the pink with daily exercise. Now what form that exercise is to take is a matter .for each individual to decide'. Office workers, machine and piece-work operators—folk who sit or stand about at work—want some free type of exercise that loosens and limbers them upswimming, gardening, tennis—any form of exercise that builds muscles. Heavy manual and industrial labourers, who use their big muscles in their jobs, should seek recreation that takes them into the fresh air and is restful, not making heavy calls on their muscles again. Every person with a sound body will benefit from some form of regular exercise in the daily routine —exercise separate from that of work.
