Te Teko Gamblers Fined: Sequel To Police Raid
Sequel to the dramatic police raid on Tai Hunia’s Te Teko billiard saloon late on the night of February 20 was the appearance of Hunia and thirteen other Te Teko residents before the Magistrate charged with breaches of the gaming laws.
Hunia, pleading guilty to using the place as a common gaming house, was fined £lO, costs 12s. Twelve of the others, Pia Moses, Joseph Reid, Timi Chase, Dick Ngahu, Takawai Edwards, Eru Rewiti, Robert Ngahu, Leonard Elliott, William Koperu, Pikitu Wanihau, Mea Hopea and Thomas Pirihera, were convicted of being found without lawful excuse in a common gaming house. Each Was fined £2, costs 12s.
The thirteenth man, Robert Glenn (Mr G. Otley) ' established the fact that,. his presence- in the place when it Was raided was-quite innocent, and the- case against him was dismissed.
Mr Barry put in a plea for leniency on Hunia’s behalf.
