Natural Petroleum Nearly Exhausted: Alternative Sources Are Available
“Petroleum is now being used at such a rate in relation to the total amount in the earth’s crust that its complete exhaustion is, from a geological viewpoint, alarmingly imminent.’” This is what Dr. Kirtley F. Mather, Harvard University Professor of Geology, said at a meeting of the British Association held in Dundee.
Oil production in the United States in five or ten yeers from now will probably be insufficient to meet that country’s needs, he said. From 1950 onwards, the oil resources of the world will begin to drop. “But, just in case a generous administration does decide on freedom of movement for the motorist,” he added, “you will be pleased to know that alternative sources of oil, distinct from natural petroleum, are almost unbelievably abundant.” There is enough oil shale and coal available in the United States alone to provide the equivalent of two thousand million barrels of crude oil each year for at least a thousand years.
