Tauranga County Council’s Changed Attitude To Catchment Proposals
“This council has changed its views completely since the first’proposals were issued,” stated the Tauranga County Clerk (Mr A. F. Fox) in a comprehensive report on the proposed Catchment Board for the Bay of Plenty. “Its changed viewpoint was a logical one taking into account all the. then known facts,” he added. “Today, although those facts have the same import, there is the threat of a flat works rate and loaded representation to be considered. “If these threats materialise, then this county would be best served by being in an area of its own. It would appear,” stated the County Clerk, “that this council could support in principle the idea of one Catchment Board for the Bay of Plenty, at the same time making as clear as possible its invidious position, in the event of changes in method of rating and representation.” The clerk pointed out that the Local Government Commission would sit on or about April 28, 29 or 30 next to hear evidence with regard to the formation of a Catchment Board or boards for the Bay of Plenty, a matter which had been under discussion since 1943.
