Kitchen Wisdom For Harrassed Housewives
The next time you grill bacon cut a. slice of bread for each rasher and place them in the base of the griller with the rashers on top. As the bacon cooks, the fat from the bacon soaks into the bread. Turn the bread occasionally and after taking up the bacon grill 'the bread a few more minutes until it begins to turn golden brown. This is a good way to use up stale bread, and kiddies like it better than toast. If you can’t get kidneys for your steak and kidney pie, then just grate a little nutmeg over the meat before you stew it. Tastes just as if actual kidneys were in the stew. ~ Broad beans, if served with a little parsley sauce, are delicious. Also carrots, if cut into slender finger lengths, take less time to cook and become “something different” if served with parsley sauce. Next time you are making jam tarts or turnovers, put a handful of cereals in with the jam. It improves the flavour and saves the jam. Also when making coconut tarts or cakes mix in a cereal and you will need less coconut. Both jam and coconut are scarce* so this idea should help a lot. When stewing prunes add on& teaspoonful of cornflour to every half pound of fruit. This not only makes a good syrup, but also improves the flavour. A little curry powder sprinkled on tomatoes when making sandwiches adds greatly to their flavour. A teaspoonful of baking soda added to the mixture for a mustard plaster will prevent it from blistering the skin.
