Aucklander Accused Of Matawhero Safe Theft, Reserves Defence
Sixteen police witnesses from Gisborne, East Coast and Opotiki districts, including a scientist from Wellington, were assembled to give evidence in the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court when Douglas Wright aged 37, labourer, Auckland (Mr K A. Woodward), appeared on remand before Messrs Myles Doyle and G. Hillyard, J’s.P. on a charge of breaking and entering the hotel of Walter Wilson, Matawhero, on December 28 and the theft of a safe valued at £95, money and cheques amounting to £832 18s Id and 12 packets of tobacco to a total value of £929 15s Id, the property of Wilson and others.
Wright was arested. at Te Kaha in January and has been kept in custody in Gisborne since that date. The police case was conducted by Detective-Sergeant R. H. Waterson. Wright pleaded not guilty . and through his solicitor, reserved his defence and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Gisborne on February 24.
